Nurturing Healthy Schools Where Every Child Thrives.
CHHIP
COMPREHENSIVE | HEALTH + HYGIENE | IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
Broadleaf fosters innovative learning and growth opportunities in rural primary schools through CHHIP, a multicomponent school health program.
School Health Activists
CHHIP is delivered by SHAs, trained community members, who ensure every child’s readiness to learn and thrive. Broadleaf has been at the forefront of pioneering this innovative delivery model for school health promotion.
Three Components of CHHIP
Health Education
-
Comprehensive health education empowers children as agents of change to improve their personal health and the health of their community.
-
SHAS deliver weekly health lessons on developmentally appropriate health and hygiene topics such as oral hygiene, nutrition, and building empathy
-
Health lessons develop knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that improve the health and wellbeing of students while promoting the health of the broader community
Primary Health Services
-
SHAs deliver equitable, accessible, and, and quality healthcare in schools to safeguard every child’s wellbeing.
-
Students receive preventative health screenings and early interventions to improve individual health outcomes
-
SHAs increase access to specialized services by supporting families in in all aspects of referring children with more significant health concerns
Healthy School Environments
-
CHHIP fosters a safe physical and social school environment in which children can learn, grow, and thrive.
-
CHHIP partners with schools to ensure access to clean, safe, and gender-inclusive water and sanitation facilities.
-
CHHIP supports school communities in implementing inclusive teaching methodologies that respect and engage all learners
CHHIP was initiated in 2012 in 7 schools in 3 communities. With your support, Broadleaf has sustained our partnership in these communities while steadily expanding our impact. In 2024, we are reaching 1400 children in 22 rural primary schools.
Sustained Impact
Always Innovating
CHHIP continuously changes, adapts, and grows based on community needs and desires. Many of Broadleaf’s innovations begin in CHHIP communities and grow into independent programs.
School Nutrition Gardens
Students and teachers partner with members of local agricultural communities to design and grow school nutrition gardens, ultimately producing healthy and indigenous foods for school lunches.
Himalayan Clean Up
CHHIP partners with organizations across the fragile ecosystems of the Himalayas to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental awareness.
Menstrual Health Awareness
SHAs support communities in breaking the silence and stigma associated with menstruation through community-based knowledge building opportunities.
